Sometimes it's time for change, for new beginnings. After the band Aphranova around vocalist/saxophonist and songwriter Angelique van Os fell apart due to the effects of the pandemic, Angelique now continues under the same name Aphranova on her own with various projects and collaborations.
Aphranova has diverse faces and moves between her own songs -where pop, fusion and acid-jazz merge-, energetic jazz funk and dance classics with DJ Sandstorm's Jazz Mash as well as the new semi acoustic trio Aphranova Sings 80s90s Unplugged. See more soon on projects.
NEW SINGLE SURILL LURILL – with Norwegian saxplayer Karl Seglem
Already since 2015, Aphranova has been collaborating with Norwegian saxophonist, geithornist, poet and composer Karl Seglem. Karl played on two pieces the EP Late Bloomer and two songs on The Crossing. Now Aphranova brings a partially improvised vocalese to Karl's new single Surill Lurill which will be released July 5 on digital streaming platforms. The song is the first single from the new album and diptych, Path. Hope. Myth, (the English version of Mytevegar), which will be released on Oct. 18.
The piece was produced and mixed by drummer/percussionist Alf Magne Hillestad (Ida Maria, Synne Vo, among others) and inspired by a children's song from the Western Norwegian Island of Bømlo, where Karl spent a lot of time in the 1980s with his good friend Kenneth Sivertsen (1961-2006).
Aphranova is a female fronted band that combines jazz-pop, fusion and acid-jazz, telling personal stories which sounds like a mixture of Sade meets Incognito, with flavors of Steely Dan, Becca Stevens and ambient atmospheres from Norwegian jazz.
Quotes from the press about debut album The Crossing:
“The songs of Angelique Van Os and Tony Hoyting are pieces of art by themselves. The features of Norwegian saxophone player Karl Seglem and the Red Limo String Quartet is very nicely integrated. It makes The Crossing one of the most surprising releases of the year” - Jean-Paul Heck, Soundz
“Everything about The Crossing breaths melody, harmony and the desire for one's own identity, within feasible and excecutable limits. (…) And that sounds extremely fascinating.” – Kees Smallegange, OOR
“With The Crossing, the Dutch jazz pop formation Aphranova makes an exceptionally meritorious debut. Aphranova doesn't sound like a pop band with a jazzy sauce. A poppy freshness has been added to the unmistakable jazz base. Paradoxically, it lends a weight that many other bands in the jazz-pop segment lack.” – Eric van Domburg Scipio, HEAVEN****
“Aphranova proves with this debut album that the Netherlands does indeed have an excellent jazz-pop/fusion band. I can therefore confidently recommend this album to fans of this genre!” – Peter Marinus, Bluestownmusic.nl
